Reichenbach meets underspecification

چکیده
Abstract This paper investigates the long-term diachronic development of perfect and preterite tenses in German provides a novel analysis by supplementing Reichenbach’s (1947) classical theory tense notion underspecification. Based on newly compiled parallel corpus spanning entire documented history German, we show that question is cyclic: It starts out with only one form (preterite) compatible both current relevance narrative past readings (early) Old High and, via three intermediate stages, arrives at again (perfect) same modern Upper dialects. We propose order to capture all attested stages must allow be unspecified for R (reference time), merely being inferred pragmatically. then transitions between different can explained interplay semantics pragmatics.

Morphological underspecification meets oblique case: Syntactic and processing effects in German *
In German, oblique Cases (dative and genitive) require morphological licensing while structural Cases (nominative and accusative) do not. This difference can be captured by assuming that in German, NPs bearing oblique Case have an extra structural layer Kase phrase (KP) which is missing in NPs bearing structural Case. Focusing on dative NPs, we will show that the postulation of such a phrase-st...
متن کاملReichenbach Fuzzy Set of Transitivity
Fuzzy implicators are the basic ingredients of many applications. So it becomes essential to study the various features of an implicator before implementing it in any practical application. This paper discusses the properties of transitivity of a fuzzy relation on a given universe and measure of fuzzy transitivity defined in terms of the Reichenbach fuzzy implicator which is an s-implicator.
متن کاملGrounds and limits: Reichenbach and foundationalist epistemology
From 1929 onwards, C. I. Lewis defended the foundationalist claim that judgements of the form ‘x is probable’ only make sense if one assumes there to be a ground y that is certain (where x and y may be beliefs, propositions, or events). Without this assumption, Lewis argues, the probability of x could not be anything other than zero. Hans Reichenbach repeatedly contested Lewis’s idea, calling i...
متن کاملOrder-independence and Underspecification
In standard Montague Semantics we find a very close correspondence between syntactic and semantic rules (the ‘Rule-to-Rule Hypothesis’). This is attractive from a processing point of view, as we like to think of syntactic and semantic processing as being done in tandem, with information flowing in both directions, from parsing to interpretation and vice versa. The parsing procedure erects the n...
متن کاملContrast and underspecification
It has been argued that there is a close relationship between the notions of contrast in discourse structure and in information structure, as well as between corrections and denial and information structural contrast (cf. e.g. Umbach 2004). Recent analyses of the semantics of markers of such contrastive relations, such as but and aber , suggest that the discourse objects that are being contrast...
